Sustainability at SWISS WorldCargo

Shaping a more responsible future in air logistics

At SWISS WorldCargo, sustainability is a core strategic priority.
As part of SWISS and the Lufthansa Group, we contribute to ambitious climate goals while continuously enhancing the efficiency and responsibility of our operations.
Our focus spans from significant investments in modern aircraft and low-emission ground handling to breakthrough technologies like Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), Solar Fuels, and Direct Air Capture (DAC) — all supported by long-term partnerships and transparent emissions reporting.

Our pillars of sustainability

We structure our sustainability efforts around four strategic areas that guide our long-term actions — from daily operations to future-focused innovation, partnerships, and alignment with group-wide targets.

Operational efficiency

We continuously reduce emissions through more efficient aircraft, optimized flight planning, and improved ground handling. Our goal is to make every step of air cargo logistics more climate-conscious.

Technology & innovation

From AeroSHARK performance coatings to Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Direct Air Capture, we support and invest in scalable technologies that drive measurable, long-term emissions reductions.

Collaboration & supply chain

We work with partners and suppliers across the logistics ecosystem to advance more sustainable supply chains, share knowledge, and build momentum for systemic change.

Group-wide alignment

As part of SWISS and the Lufthansa Group, we contribute to the group’s commitment to reach net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

Key initiatives and actions

Our sustainability strategy is backed by concrete, scalable initiatives. Each of these solutions plays a key role in reducing the environmental impact of air cargo — both today and in the long term.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Reducing lifecycle emissions with SAF

Aviation Fuel (SAF) reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 90% (Gold SAF) compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuel.
SWISS WorldCargo actively supports the development and scaling of SAF and is proud to be the launching carrier for Synhelion’s solar fuel innovation.

AeroSHARK Technology

Aircraft efficiency inspired by nature

AeroSHARK is a bionic film applied to our Boeing 777 fleet. Inspired by sharkskin, it reduces aerodynamic drag, improving fuel efficiency and saving over 15,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
It is one of the most effective technologies available today for reducing emissions without modifying aircraft systems.

Direct Air Capture

Permanent carbon removal through DAC

In partnership with Climeworks, we support Direct Air Capture (DAC) — a cutting-edge technology that removes CO₂ directly from the atmosphere and stores it permanently underground.
DAC also contributes to the long-term development of synthetic SAF and supports our industry’s path to defossilisation.

CO₂ Emission Transparency

Measuring emissions with accuracy

SWISS WorldCargo applies a transparent and science-based CO₂ calculation method for all shipments.
Based on the DIN EN 16258 standard, our approach provides customers with clear visibility into their transport-related carbon footprint, enabling more informed, climate-conscious decisions.

Contributing to group-wide sustainability and global aviation goals

SWISS WorldCargo plays an active role in the Lufthansa Group’s sustainability strategy, benefiting from shared investments and contributing to climate-focused progress across the network. This includes fleet renewal, operational efficiency, and the scaling of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through joint infrastructure and sourcing efforts. We also align with global initiatives such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and CORSIA, ensuring that our actions support long-term, measurable climate goals.
