A transport without efficiency is like a world without pizza

Copied!

It’s well known that Italy has long been a major exporter of many iconic delicacies that enchant population worldwide: cheese, wine, tomatoes and many more. Last year we already told you the story of several special shipments of chestnuts that travelled from Milan all the way to New York City, bringing holiday cheer to many Americans during the cold season. Well today we turn our attention to another culinary treasure and one of the most beloved foods on the planet.

We fill our aircraft’s bellies to (ful)fill yours

This journey originated near the city of Naples, where the pizzas are crafted with the well-known Italian expertise by a renowned company in the region. The pizzas were prepared for shipment and transported via trucking by our valued customer and freight forwarder DSV from a location near Naples to Milan. From there, they continued their journey from Milan to Zurich on Swiss WorldCargo’s trucks. Once arrived at our Zurich Hub, the pizzas were ready to fly in a SWISS aircraft’s belly on an afternoon long-haul flight to the U.S. for the final leg of their journey to fulfil the bellies of many pizza lovers across the Atlantic.

Naples flavors beat deep-dish pizza tradition

The pizzas’ final destination was Chicago. However, it would have been unrealistic to expect all shipments to travel on the same flight to the windy city. The total cargo was therefore divided into 10 separate shipments, making a total of 63 tons of pizza! Some consignments were routed through Newark or Boston, and transported by DSV in temperature-controlled trucks to their final destination. Each individual shipment with its precise route and timing has been thoroughly planned and agreed upon beforehand by all parties involved. Swiss WorldCargo flew all shipments exactly as planned; after all, pizza simply deserves our consistency.

Each transport was successfully completed by our airfreight division in the span of a day, compared to the 15 days that would have been needed for the same transportation via sea freight. Speed and urgency played an important role in this transportation series, as the final recipients – namely various distributors in the U.S, including major supermarkets – impose specific delivery deadlines for the cargo to make it to their shelves on time.

If pizza is cool, its transportation also needs to be

Swiss WorldCargo’s solid expertise in the perishables area, as well as our partners’ reliability, were key factors throughout the various transportation stages of the pizzas’ journey on the road and in the skies. Each consignment was, in fact, maintained at a constant temperature of +2 to +8 degrees Celsius for 72 hours, ensuring optimal transportation conditions during both the airfreight and the road feeder segments of the trip. To safeguard the integrity of the pizzas throughout their entire journey, each 200 kg pallet contained at least 50 kg of dry ice, an essential measure to preserve freshness and quality from point of departure to destination.

Swiss WorldCargo is your cravings’ best friend

Swiss WorldCargo’s extensive knowledge in the transportation of perishables not only guarantees that your shipments arrive to their destination on time and in perfect conditions, but also that gastronomic pleasures and life’s joys, such as pizza, continue to be enjoyed all around the world.
